IMO, it’s a contributor - the whole thing is about setting aside critical thinking facilities, so when an ideologically aligned (for instance) opinion floats across someone’s figurative mental desk, they’re even more likely to set aside their intellectual curiosity and that likely leads to entrenchment and selection bias, then tribalism.
